Internet or satellite TV would be at your own cost. Electric, water, heat and basic phone are provided. Housing in the caretaker's quarters is available at no cost.

The quarters include an entrance room, full kitchen and living room on the main floor, and three bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs. The first and second floor are available for you as your primary residence.

The caretaker's quarters are located in the west wing of the lighthouse.

Caretakers are needed year-round for general maintenance, upkeep and occupancy of the facilities and grounds.

During the winter season when the lighthouse museum, gift shop and exhibits are closed, (October 16 through May 14), there are still frequent visitors to the grounds.

Days off during the May-October season will be Mondays and Tuesdays. During this extremely busy season, caretakers are expected to work 40 hours per week, five days a week.

The lighthouse museum, gift shop and exhibits are open to visitors May 15th through October 15th.

The lighthouse caretaker volunteer position often involves physically strenuous activities including standing for long periods of time, walking, climbing stairs, cleaning, sidewalk snow removal, boardwalk sand removal, mowing, weeding, and moving boxes of supplies.

Most of the interaction with visitors involves interpreting the lighthouse and Great Lakes maritime history and answering questions.

This position involves interacting with numerous visitors from every walk of life on a daily basis.

Due to the heavy workload and the challenging nature of the work, couples are encouraged to apply.

Upon successful completion of one year, an additional year may be negotiated.

A minimum one-year commitment is expected.

The “Soo,” as it is referred to, is a full-service community with schools, a hospital and a university. Marie, Michigan, with a population of 14,500.

The Point Iroquois Lighthouse is approximately 33 miles from the city of Sault Ste. The population of Brimley is approximately 1,200. This Great Lake lighthouse receives approximately 45,000 visitors annually and is located just outside the community of Brimley, Michigan.
